Me and my mother got around to making the home made laundry detergent i discussed previously. It came out perfectly. We did make some minor changes to the recipe. Instead of making a full batch we made a batch one fifth the size. This ends up making two gallons worth of detergent which will last my family of four almost a year. In addition we did not use Fels Naptha. Instead we used Ivory soap (for its ease of grating) that had a slight aloe scent to it. This ended up making a very lightly scented detergent that does not irritate my skin. In addition the cleaning power has been excellent. Since using this i have not had to pretreat any of my laundry to get stains out, in fact if i decide i need a stronger detergent i can just add a bit extra of the detergent, or when i make my next batch make it with a bit more washing soda or borax.
Will you try making your own detergent? What other ways do you cut down on your cleaning expenses?
