The Recession Reaches the Educators

January 29, 2009

Yesterday news reached me that some local school districts that i grew up around would be shutting down some of there schools.  My mom happens to teach in one of these districts.  She was informing me of the cuts they are already making, limiting heat and light usage.  She is just one year away from tenure and is facing  being laid off at the end of the year.

Up untill now my family has been relativly unaffected by the job losses, and i was not expecting the first lay off to be of a teacher.  this lack of surplus income combined with loans my mother incured when she was ill and school debt is starting to weigh down.  I am at this point doing everything i can to limit my burden on the family.  I am hoping to find a part time job so i will only have to rely on my family for my car insurance and payments.

If there are any readers out there who have already started to prepare for the possibility of lay offs what have you done that you found to save larger sums of money?

Yesterday NPR was talking about budget cuts for the university system in the state of Arizona. Students came together and protested in the capital. It’s sad that you only have the option of cutting spending or raising taxes. Either way you lose. I wish your mom the best of luck, mine is a teacher as well.
